Event Name Douglas Fourth of July Race 1968
Race Name Two and a Half Mile
Event Location Douglas Bridge to Douglas Island Ball Park
Event Description The two-and-a-half-mile Fourth of July race from the Douglas bridge to the Douglas Island Ball Park, Thursday 4 July 1968. Nine men aged fifteen and over took part. The winners were given large silver cups with a runner on top. Guy Thibodeau, 17, won it for the second time, finishing well clear of Ray Ranney, 17, and Kirk Zinck, 15. His time was never published as a number: Mrs. William Sweeny told the Empire it was "somewhere between 11 and 12 minutes", so it is recorded here as unrecorded rather than guessed at. Only the first three of the nine were named in the paper. The same report says Thibodeau had won the previous year in 11 minutes 45 seconds. That 1967 running is not recorded as an event here, because the day it was held is unknown - 1966's race was on the 3rd of July and this one on the 4th.
