Parks and Recreation Road Run Mendenhall Glacier parking lot, JuneauRoad Run held by the Juneau Parks and Recreation Department, 9:00 AM from the Mendenhall Glacier parking lot. Two distances, ten miles and six miles. The six-mile course ran from the Glacier parking lot to Auke Bay School. The ten-mile course ran along the back Loop Road and finished back at the Glacier parking lot. Entry was $1, with registration before the race and refreshments afterwards. Certificates were awarded to all finishers. Deliberately aimed at occasional joggers as well as competitive runners. "We want to encourage people who are occasional joggers to come," said coordinator Mary Hakala, a marathon runner who had raced in Europe and at Boston. "It's not so much fun to run alone." The run was the SECOND in a series of summer events organised jointly by the Taku Striders and Juneau Parks and Recreation, and was promoted as training for the department's own Marathon, announced for 28 July. SOURCE: "Marathoners Get Ready - Road Run Set Saturday", Juneau Empire, 8 June 1978. A preview; no results were published in it and none are held here. NOTE: the CBJ Juneau Marathon on this site is also dated 10 June 1978, but this article places a Road Run on that Saturday and the marathon later in the summer. One of the two dates is wrong and neither has been altered to fit the other.DefaultRaceDirector Unassigned1978-06-10 09:00:00nononoRegistration Form
