Capitol Building to the Tlingit Haida Community Center, Salmon Creek, Juneau July 10th 1982 (Saturday) 9:00AM | Distance: 3 miles Location: start at the Capitol Building, finish at the Tlingit Haida Community Center near Salmon Creek Start Time: 9:00 AM Registration Fee: 5 dollars The Governor's Cup Fun Run, sponsored by the Juneau City-Borough Parks and Recreation Department. 477 runners registered and the Empire printed placings to 435. Guy Thibodeau was first across the finish line in 15:15. The advert says runners would "follow the same course as last year", so there was a 1981 running; the first 450 to register were promised T-shirts. THE RESULTS ARE INCOMPLETE AND THE PAPER SAYS SO. The caption to the photograph of the start ends: the Parks and Recreation Department "this year didn't compile complete race results. Parks and Recreation is emphasizing the fun in the run." Nine place numbers are simply not printed - 63, 65, 68, 80, 165, 166, 181, 184 and 200 - leaving 426 lines, of which eleven read "No tag" or "No number" and name nobody. Those eleven are not imported; 415 named finishers are. Several runners appear as an initial and a surname, or a surname alone, exactly as printed. Five printed times run backwards against the finish order and are stored as printed, each with a note on its row. No distance is printed in the 1982 clippings, and the course map carries no scale. It is three miles on the authority of the year before: the advert says runners would "follow the same course as last year", and the Empire of 13 July 1981 reports Paul Pusich leading "the field of 405 runners for almost the entire three-mile distance" from the Capitol Building to the Tlingit and Haida Center. University of Alaska Juneau campus, Auke Lake May 8th 1982 (Saturday) 9:00AM | Distance: 10 miles Location: the University of Alaska Juneau parking lot, south around the Loop Road and back Start Time: 9:00 AM Registration Fee: 1 dollar, plus a sponsor pledging at least 50 cents a mile The sixth Magnificent Mendenhall Mudpuddle Meet, sponsored by Juneau Parks and Recreation, the University of Alaska Juneau and Special Olympics. The Empire headlined it "Race draws 102 runners"; 98 are listed as finishing. Art Rodriguez was quickest overall in 53:38. THE RACE MOVED TO A SATURDAY this year, having been run on a Sunday since 1977. All three accounts say so, including the caption to the photograph of the start. DATE: none of the four Empire items prints one, only "Saturday". The meet had been held on the first or second weekend of May every year - 1 May 1977, 30 April 1978, 6 May 1979, 4 May 1980, 10 May 1981 - and 8 May 1982 is the second Saturday. That is an inference from the pattern and not something the paper states. Times are printed as minutes and seconds, with the minutes running past sixty, and are converted here. Joe Malinovsky's is damaged in the printing and noted on his row. John Ebona, who the Empire notes is handicapped, finished six miles of the ten-mile course. Welles Gabier is filed under Women over 40 in the paper. He is the man who ran the 1979, 1980 and 1981 meets in the mens brackets, and his result is held on his own record. Fish Creek, North Douglas to the Tlingit Haida Community Center, Salmon Creek, Juneau May 1st 1982 (Saturday) 4:00PM | Distance: 7.9 miles, point to point Location: start at Fish Creek on North Douglas, finish at the Tlingit Haida Community Center by Salmon Creek Start Time: 4:00 PM, one minute before low tide Registration Fee: 4 dollars, including admission to the Queen Ida concert The second annual May Day Mud Race, run on a 1.2 foot tide the Empire called "slightly more challenging than last year's minus one inch tide". Runners took off from Fish Creek, crossed the flats near the runway and followed the old highway to the finish. The Habitat Division of the Department of Environmental Conservation supervised the course to avoid damage to the wildlife. Art Rodriguez won in 46:42, seventeen seconds ahead of Phil Peck. Mary Hakala took the women's open division in 57:31. Forty-three finishers are listed, in six divisions. Margaret Levitt was last in 1:42:42 and was given a 25 dollar gift certificate for it. Over 300 dollars of prizes were put up by Juneau businesses, down to a lunch for two in the junior division. Festivities afterwards were at the National Guard Armory: a gumbo dinner at 7:00 PM and a concert by Queen Ida, a Cajun band from Louisiana, at 9:00 PM. The course ran Fish Creek to Salmon Creek this year. By the fourth annual in 1984 it was being run in the opposite direction over the same 7.9 miles.
