Child Inc.-REACH 10-K Handicap Run 4213 Taku Blvd, Mendenhall ValleyDistance: 10 kilometers Location: 4213 Taku Blvd to Mark Allen Drive, alongside Egan Drive and Old Glacier Highway Start Time: 9:00 AM, registration from 8:00 AM Race Director: Linda Layfield Registration Fee: 10 dollar minimum pledge, including a T-shirt A pledge run for REACH and Child, Inc., starting and finishing at their group homes in the Mendenhall Valley. The Empire billed it as possibly the most exciting finish of the Juneau summer, and the format is why. Every entrant was given a handicap from the 10Ks they had already run that summer, or from their minutes per mile over shorter races if they had run none. Slower runners set off first and faster runners later, so that if the handicaps were right the whole field would reach the line together. They very nearly did: adding each runner's delay to their time gives 51:43, 52:46, then 57:48 and 58:02 and twenty-three more inside four minutes of each other, 29 runners finishing within ten minutes of the first. CJ Stewart won off 15 minutes with a 36:43, from Paul Tierney off 12 minutes in 40:46 and Leslie Johnson off 11:15 in 46:33. Al Graves ran the fastest 10K of the day, 31:24 off a 28 minute delay, and finished 16th. The times recorded here are the actual running times, so the order on this page is NOT the order the Empire printed - those places are handicap-adjusted. The handicaps themselves are not stored; this site has no column for them. The table gives no ages, no divisions and no genders, so none are recorded. Prizes included return trips to Skagway on the MV Fairweather and to Haines on LAB. Results transcribed from the Juneau Empire. One thing in the preview does not hold up: it places the race in the Lemon Creek area, which does not match the Taku Blvd and Mark Allen Drive addresses it then gives - both are in the Mendenhall Valley. Both are recorded as printed.Linda Layfield1986-07-26 09:00:00noyesyesRegistration Form
