| Event Description | Distance: 26.2 miles Location: North Douglas Highway An Empire Cup Runners Series race, run out and back along the North Douglas Highway with the Douglas Island Half Marathon alongside it. Twenty-nine finished in monsoon-like conditions - steady hard rain, and a head wind on the return leg. Brian Nelson of Bakersfield, California won in 2:53:14, six seconds ahead of Glenn Frick of Juneau. Dori Robertson of Chattaroy, Washington won the women's race in 3:24:35, taking more than four minutes off the course best; her time stood as the record until Kelly Wild broke it by twenty seconds in 1996. Virginia Farneman, 59, completed the course in 4:54:10, which was the women's masters record until 1996 as well. The two runners expected to challenge the men's course record never appeared. "The only no-shows among the 30 runners registered for the full marathon were the two standout Moroccans," the Juneau Empire reported. Race director Ben Van Alen could account for it only so far: "I don't know what happened. The last I had heard from them was a week ago last Monday when I had faxed the information about the race to the U.S. Embassy in Morocco." The Douglas Island Half Marathon was run the same morning and its results are not held here; the newspaper printed them in a form that cannot be transcribed reliably from the copy available.
