History Frank Maier

The Juneau Marathon and Half-Marathon, run on Saturday 10 August 1985 from the Mendenhall Glacier Visitors Center parking lot at 8 a.m.

Bryan Schultz, 24, of Spokane, won the marathon in 2:36:27 from a field of ten. It was his second marathon and his first win - he had run his first at 17, the Spokane Heart, in under 2 hours 43 minutes, and four knee injuries had come between. He was in Juneau visiting his father and had not planned to run one, having already won the Governor's Cup here on 20 July; he entered the army on 20 August. His training was 70 miles two weeks before the race and 85 the week of it.

Alan Graves won the half-marathon in 1:12:20, a personal best, and said the headwind by Fred Meyer cost him the 1:11 he was chasing. Andy Grossman was second in 1:17:09, a recovery from fifth at the turn-around. Jeanie Smith won the women's half-marathon in 1:40:20 and, with Graves, was using the race as a training run for the Klondike Trail of '98 Relay in September.

The out-and-back course ran from the glacier to Centennial Hall downtown and back, with the half-marathon starting at the same time and turning at the Switzer Village aid station. Aid stations with water and Gatorade stood at the 2-mile, 4-mile and 6.5-mile markers, near Bartlett Memorial Hospital and at Centennial Hall, and served runners in both directions. A late change to the course sent runners twice around the block bounded by Willoughby, Whittier and Egan before they turned back for the glacier. Entry was $7 with a T-shirt and $3 without. Nine runners had pre-registered for the marathon and seven for the half; Dianne Watson, recreation supervisor at the Juneau Parks and Recreation Department, took entries at the race between 7:30 and 7:45.

SOURCES: the Juneau Empire of Monday 12 August 1985, page 6, "Schultz wins first marathon" by Richard F. Schmitz, and the finish list on page 7; an undated preview, "Marathoners take to local highways"; and an undated course map.

INCOMPLETE: the scan of the half-marathon finish list is cut off after 14th place, so only fourteen of its finishers are held here. Jeanie Smith's winning women's time of 1:40:20 is three seconds slower than the last name on the list, so at least one finisher is missing. Her result is not recorded because her position is unknown and the name cannot be matched with confidence. The ten marathon finishers are complete.
