Race Director: Floyd Strain
Juneau's third annual marathon, two laps of the Loop Road including the leg to the Glacier, beginning and ending there.
Medals went to the first three in each of six divisions: men's, women's, high school boys' and girls', and junior high boys' and girls'. All runners were asked to have a doctor's examination before entering, and juvenile entrants to bring a note from a parent confirming a physical exam within the past year. Run by Juneau Parks and Recreation.
Awards went to the first three in each of six divisions: men's, women's, high school boys' and girls', and junior high boys' and girls'. Entries cost a dollar and closed at 6:30 a.m.; Strain asked every runner for a doctor's examination first, and a parent's note from each juvenile.
History The first certified marathon run in Juneau. Meet director Floyd Strain reported that the course had been surveyed and was "now certified as an official marathon", with about 150 yards added to the old course to make the full 26 miles 385 yards; the two 1972 races had therefore been run slightly short. The Frank Maier course was certified by The Athletics Congress nineteen years later, which is the standard that lets a time qualify a runner for Boston.
Only three men finished. The Empire's photograph of the finish is captioned "Dale Harmer, Mike Zagars and Dan Veal were the only finishers in Saturday's Juneau marathon"; Harmer won the men's division in 3 hours 3 minutes and 1.3 seconds, and Zagars the boys' division in 4:36:58. No time was published for Veal.
The three photographs show race numbers 3, 6 and 2. The caption almost certainly names the men in the same order, but it does not say so, and a bib number is printed to the public against a runner's name - so the numbers are recorded here and not against anybody.
