| Event Name | CBJ Juneau Marathon 1972 |
| Race Name | Marathon |
| Event Location | Mendenhall Glacier, Juneau |
| Event Description | Distance: 26 miles Location: Mendenhall Glacier Start Time: 5:00 AM Race Director: Floyd Strain A marathon run by Juneau Parks and Recreation, twice the length of the Mendenhall Loop Road. The half way point of each lap was at DeHart's, where refreshments were provided. Open to everyone, men and women of all ages; entrants under 19 needed a parental permission form from the Parks and Recreation office, Mount Jumbo School or the Community Programs office at 210 Admiral Way. Competitors were told to come dressed warmly and ready to run, since there were no dressing rooms, and were given track numbers. Place medals went to the top six. Everyone who completed the 26 miles received an award. Twenty-two started, 16 finished the 26 miles, five covered 13 - Guy Thibodeau, John Parsons, Mark Heard, Dale Sams and John Harris - and Bob Garrison retired with a leg injury. The 13-mile group and Bob Garrison are not held as results here because the Empire printed no times for them. Four women finished the full distance: Pat Watson, Denice Blefgen, Peggy James and Betty Watson, who is Pat Watson's mother. The youngest entrant, John Harris, was 12. Pat Watson is held without a time. The Empire printed 3:15:15 for her, which cannot be right: she is placed 8th, between George Fisher's 3:45:28 and Jim Beedle's 3:51:15, and the report of the August race says Carol Hogins' 3:31:10 undercut Pat Watson's women's record by nearly 20 minutes. Her real time was close to 3:51 and is not recoverable, so none is claimed. DATE: the Empire of Thursday 22 June 1972 reports the race as having been held "last Saturday", which is 17 June. This event previously carried 10 June, for which no source has been found. |
