| Description | Distance: 10 miles Location: the University of Alaska Juneau campus, out around the Mendenhall Loop Road Start Time: 8:00 AM Registration Fee: 1 dollar The first Magnificent Mendenhall Mudpuddle Meet, staged by the University of Alaska, Juneau and Juneau Parks and Recreation to help defray travel costs for Juneau children going to the State Special Olympics in Anchorage. Runners found sponsors who pledged money by the mile, and Jim Dumont of Parks and Recreation asked that cheques be made out to the Juneau Association for Retarded Citizens. The course looped the University parking lot twice to pick up the six-tenths of a mile needed to make ten, went down the driveway to Glacier Highway and south into a chilly headwind, turned left onto the Loop Road for a quiet run toward the Glacier, then left again after about three miles for a hilly four miles back to the Glacier Highway and an uphill mile to the finish. Guy Thibodeau, the 26-year-old Juneau-Douglas High School track coach, won in 58 minutes 25 seconds. The first 48 finishers were promised a t-shirt and everyone got one, printed with a runner holding an umbrella and the words "I did it in the rain - The Magnificent Mendenhall Mud Puddle Meet". Ribbons went to the first three in each of eight age brackets. The Empire says 43 people ran and 42 finished, then prints 43 names with times. All 43 are held here. Steve Schmitz's time is printed "1:00.9", a digit short. He placed second and the paper says Glen Frick and Mark Rosier, both on 1:00.20, followed closely, so it is recorded as 1:00:09. Two pairs share a time exactly, as printed: Colleen Olson and Barbara Olson on 2:45:15, and Mary Lynn Bruce and Sherry Layral on 2:23:33. |
