The first Sperl-Gamble-Stevens Memorial Run, five miles on Saturday 2 June 1984 - run, according to the following year's preview, as "a muddy run in a driving downpour". Rick Thibodeau and Guy Thibodeau tied for the fastest time of the day at 27:19, in different age divisions. Nancy Pease won the women's division in 32:42. Thirty-nine runners took part. The run is a memorial to Juneau-Douglas High School students killed in the Viet Nam War, among them Donald Sperl, Charles Gamble Jr., Michael Stevens and Kirk Barkley. Entry fees fund a scholarship; the first award of $800 went to JDHS graduate Brian Holst, then a freshman at Notre Dame. Karl Schoeppe was among the organisers. SOURCES: the finish list headed "Sperl-Gamble-Stevens Memorial Run / Five Miles / June 2"; and the Juneau Empire's 1985 preview of the second annual, "Memorial five-mile run on tap", which supplies the winning times, the field size, the memorial's dedication and the scholarship. INCOMPLETE: thirty-nine ran and thirty-four are recorded here. The published list is cut off at the first name in the Women 30-49 division, so the five finishers missing are the remainder of that division. The 1984 running carries Stevens in its title and the 1985 one does not; both are recorded as they were printed. |
