| History |
The second annual Sperl-Gamble Memorial, five miles on Saturday 11 May 1985, starting at 10:30 a.m. at the Sewage Treatment Plant turnoff on Thane Road. The course wound through downtown Juneau, climbed Franklin and Harris Streets to Basin Road, then back-tracked to finish near the Federal Building by the Lutheran Church. A shorter 2.3-mile course omitted Basin Road and turned at 4th and Franklin. Rick Thibodeau won in 25:53, running side-by-side with Alan Graves before kicking to a 50-foot lead in the last mile. The run honours Juneau-Douglas High School students killed in the Viet Nam War, among them Donald Sperl, Charles Gamble Jr., Michael Stevens and Kirk Barkley. Entry was $5, or $15 for a family, and the fees went to a scholarship fund; the first award of $800 had gone to JDHS graduate Brian Holst, then a freshman at Notre Dame, and the 1985 recipient was to be announced on 15 May. The scholarship committee was working to build the fund to a self-sustaining level and considering a raffle as a further fund-raiser. Karl Schoeppe was among the organisers. Registration opened at 9:30 a.m. at the starting point. SOURCES: the preview "Memorial five-mile run on tap" with a course map, and a short result note headed "Thibodeau wins run", both Juneau Empire, 1985. Only the first two finishers were published. Alan Graves is recorded without a time because the Empire did not print one; his placing is from the report. |
