Distance: 3 miles Location: start on 4th Avenue between the courthouse and the Capitol; finish at the DMV parking lot on Hospital Drive Course: round Calhoun Street past the Governor's Mansion, through the highlands on Martin, Evergreen and Angus, down Highland Drive to Behrends Avenue and the Glacier Highway, then the bike path to the finish Start Time: 9:00 AM, registration 8:15 to 8:45 Registration Fee: 7 dollars The Governor's Cup Fun Run, sponsored by Juneau Parks and Recreation and described by the Empire as the most popular running event in Juneau. The 1985 Governor's Cup, three miles on Saturday 20 July. About 120 runners had pre-registered by the Friday; 178 places were published. Brian Schultz won in 16:10 - the same Schultz who three weeks later won the Juneau Marathon, having, as the Empire put it then, "already won the Governor's Cup here on 20 July". Alan Graves was second in 16:43 and Greg Raschick third in 16:48. Governor William Sheffield ran his own cup, finishing 107th in 26:21. Place 49 is printed as "name unavailable, 21:46" - a finisher with a time and no name - and cannot be recorded, so 177 of the 178 places are held here. Rick Thibodeau, who won the Mudpuddle, Flannigan's Run and the May Day Mud Race that year, is listed as disqualified and is not recorded as a finisher. Laurie Davidson and Joel Weyhe are named with no time printed and are recorded without one. Two times are printed out of sequence and are stored as they appeared: place 119 reads 17:32 among times of 27 minutes, and place 160 reads 34:31 ahead of a 161st place of 34:14. |
