Juneau August 13th 1988 (Saturday) 7:00AM | Distance: a marathon, a half marathon and a quarter marathon of 6.55 miles Location: Juneau Glenn Frick, then 49, won in 2:44:04 - inside his own best of 2:42:27 by rather less than he would have liked. "I would have been first in this year's Boston Marathon (for seniors)," he told the Empire, "but there's no telling what the competition will look like next year." He turned 50 that October, leaving the masters ranks for the seniors. Tracy Miller won the women's division in 3:37:00, ten minutes faster than the previous year's winning women's time. Robert Farr, a Juneau-Douglas High School cross-country and track runner, took the quarter marathon in 37:08, and Jim Douglas the half in 1:20:17. The Empire gives two records as they stood in 1988: the women's, Rosemary Gute's 3:03:52 from 1981 - which is exactly what this site holds for her in that year's race, entered from another source - and the overall, Tom Bernard's 2:30:46 from 1982. There is no 1982 Juneau Marathon on the site at all, so that one is a pointer rather than a record. Bernard was with the Coast Guard and went on to win the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington D.C. Glenn Frick's result was already held here without a time; it now carries the one the Empire printed. Two half-marathon rows are out of sequence in the paper and are stored as printed. Hospital Drive, Juneau to Fish Creek, North Douglas May 1st 1988 (Sunday) 8:00AM | Distance: about 7.9 miles - the rules require no set course across the mudflats Location: Hospital Drive, finishing at Fish Creek on North Douglas Start Time: 8:00 AM Race Director: Jerry Buckley Andy Grossman won in 45:09 after one of the strangest finishes the race has had - he and Kelly Miller ran the last 50 yards directly at one another and crossed almost simultaneously from opposite directions, and the judges gave it to Grossman. Both are held at 45:09. The time broke the course record of 46:11 that Al Graves set in 1986. Grossman won it by leaving the mud. He had studied aerial maps, cut out of the wetlands at Nine Mile Creek Road about a mile from Fish Creek, and finished on the North Douglas Highway. "Avoiding mud for highway is not cheating," he said - "it is exactly what race-organizer Jerry Buckley had in mind. The nice thing about the mud run is that it is a point-to-point race. The elegance is that you can try to find a better way to reach the finish line." Miller, who had led on the established route, kept the record "for what will from this point on be called the old course". Marylyn Barnwell won the women's division in 52:35. Glenn Frick, who had won the 1987 race in 47:02, ran within four seconds of that pace and finished sixth - the shortcut took nearly four minutes off the winning time.
