History The 1988 Governor's Cup, three miles on Saturday 16 July, from the State Capitol down to the DEC building near Salmon Creek.

Rick Thibodeau won it in 15:43; he had also won this race in 1984 and 1987. Ben Van Alen was second in 16:47 and Andy Grossman third in 16:56. Shelly James was the first woman in 18:24, 14th overall, from Sue Norvell in 19:42. Glenn Frick was fifth in 17:02 at the age of 49, within two seconds of his own times over the same course in 1982 and 1985.

SOURCES: the preview, Juneau Empire, Thursday 14 July 1988, page 10; a photograph of Caje Holst training, Friday 15 July 1988, page 15; a Parks and Recreation advertisement carrying the course map; and the finish list, "Running / Governor's Cup", printed by division with the overall place beside each name. The paper notes above the list that "Names are spelled as they appear in official results".

NOTES ON THE LIST. The field numbers to 181 and 174 finishers are held here. Four runners - 49th, 50th, 51st and 52nd - are printed with a surname and no given name and cannot be recorded, and places 94, 97 and 144 do not appear in the paper at all. Place 5 is printed twice, against Glenn Frick's 17:02 and Robert Farr's 17:22, and place 6 not at all.

Three times look like a dropped or doubled digit and are stored exactly as printed, each with a note: T.J. Seagle's 22:20 between neighbours of 20:16 and 20:28, Martin Saffrey's 22:23 between 31:48 and 32:24, and Scott McPherson's 35:23 behind a 145th place of 35:40. Earl Redman and Mark Pusich are six seconds out of order against their places, and Paul Sampson's 44:13 sits among three runners on 42:17.

The list spells Michael as "Michail" twice, for Michail Williams and Michail Oswald.
