| History |
The 1989 Mudpuddle, ten miles from the university parking lot at Auke Lake on Saturday 6 May, run for the Juneau Special Olympics. Thirty-five finishers in six divisions. Kevin McCarey was fastest in 53:40, ahead of Rick Thibodeau in 56:21 and Steve Schmitz in 58:30. Shelly James led the women in 1:07:21, eight seconds ahead of Debbie Dolan and 11th of the 35. Glenn Frick, at 50, went round in 1:00:04. Two runners are listed and are not recorded here: Alan Graves scratched at 8 miles and Rai Bennert at 5. They were printed as 10th and 11th in the men's 40-49, but a race that was not finished is not a result, and storing them would put the field at 37. This was an Empire Cup race. Both of the 1989 series listings in the Juneau Empire name the Mendenhall Mudpuddle, which is more than can be said for several races that appear in one list and not the other. SOURCES: a Community Happenings advertisement, Juneau Empire, Tuesday 2 May 1989, page 6; a preview, Thursday 4 May 1989, page 8; and the results, Monday 8 May 1989, page 10. NOTES ON THE LIST. The advertisement promises youth categories for 15-and-under and 16-to-26, and the results print no 15-and-under division at all and a single 16-to-26 runner. Ten miles is a long way for a child, and the likeliest reading is that the categories were offered and went unfilled - but an absent division is not evidence that nobody ran, so nothing is concluded from it. |
