The 1989 Douglas Two-Mile, run on the Fourth of July. A hundred and thirty-six finishers were printed and 134 are recorded here. Rick Thibodeau won in 9:20 from his brother Guy in 9:28, with Steve Mandella third in 9:46. JoAnn Quigg was the first woman in 12:26, 56th overall. SOURCE: Juneau Empire, "Running / Douglas Two-Mile", printed as the combined results of the July 4th Douglas Two-Mile Run. HOW THE LIST IS NUMBERED, because it is unusual and it carries information. Finishers are printed in one sequence by time. A man is given his overall place; a woman is given her place among the women, in brackets, and her overall position is left blank but not skipped - 55th is followed by "(1) JoAnn Quigg" and then by 57th. That is the only record of who was a man and who was a woman, and it covers every runner in the race. NOTES ON THE LIST. Two finishers are printed without a name, as "Bib #99" in 70th and "Bib #129" in 97th, and cannot be recorded. Place 31 carries two names on one line - "Lach Zemp ... Doug Weaver" - with a single time of 11:39 between them, and place 47 appears nowhere; the likeliest reading is that Doug Weaver was 47th and the typesetter ran the names together, so both are recorded at 11:39 with a note. The women's numbering skips (24), but no position is missing from the overall sequence, so the slip is in that column alone. Chris Winter appears here as a woman. A Chris Winter ran the Mendenhall Mudpuddle nine weeks earlier in the men's 40-49 division. They are recorded as two people. |
