The Ken Humphreys Memorial Run, two Empire Cup Runners Series races, with a wheelchair division over the 5 km.
History The first Ken Humphreys Memorial Run, Saturday 22 July 1989. A hundred and thirty-three finishers between the 5 km and the 10 km, in what the Empire called a large field.

Steve Schmitz won the 10 km in 33:54 from Alan Graves and Ben Van Alen; Shelly James led the women in 38:33. John Van Veldhiuzen, visiting from South Dakota, won the 5 km in 19:17 with Ron Taug seven seconds behind him and Dave Avila third.

Taug's second place was the story the Empire told. Three years earlier he had been a three-pack-a-day smoker; his first race was the 1986 Governor's Cup, where he finished 103rd in 25:49, and he had come down to 25:06 in 1987 and 24:08 in 1988. "I was hoping to catch him in the last stretch. I put on a kick in the last three-quarter mile, but I didn't have enough left," he said. "I've cut time off every one of my races this year. My goal is to get down to six-minute miles, and I'm almost there."

Charles Humphreys won the 5 km men's 19-and-under, and Morgan Humphreys was eighth among the 10 km women.

ON THE DATE. The report gives only "Saturday" and the scan is cropped above its masthead. The results were published on 11 August, which would ordinarily point at 5 August - but that is the day of the Juneau Half and Quarter Marathon, and thirty-three runners appear in both fields, which no one ran on a single morning. The date here is the club's, supplied by the site owner.

NOTES ON THE LIST. Five times are printed as minutes past the hour rather than in hours - 76.20, 70.05 and 96.46 - and are recorded as 1:16:20, 1:10:05 and 1:36:46. Scott McPherson is printed under a heading of his own as the wheelchair entrant over 5 km. Among the 10 km women, eighth place is three minutes slower than ninth, and both are stored as printed.
