Distance: 10 miles, with a 2-mile race over part of the same ground Location: start at the corner of Back Loop Road and the University of Alaska Southeast access road behind the library; finish mid-campus, across from the Mourant Building Course: the ten-mile follows Glacier Highway to the Brotherhood Bridge, picks up the bike trail past the post office to James Boulevard, then Mendenhall Loop Road and Back Loop Road to the start line. The two-mile turns the opposite way at Glacier Highway and loops back toward the finish past DeHart's Store. Start Time: 9:00 AM, registration 8:00 to 8:45 in front of the Mourant Building Mostly flat and all on pavement, with some hills in the latter stages. Participants must walk a quarter-mile from the registration tables to the start. Both races are in the Empire Cup Runners Series. Sponsored by Coors Beer. |

The 14th Magnificent Mendenhall Mudpuddle Meet, Saturday 12 May 1990, starting and finishing at the University of Alaska Southeast Auke Lake campus. The Empire reported 87 entrants across the two races. Rick Thibodeau was untouchable over the ten miles, winning in 55:12. The race behind him was the close one: Steve Schmitz, in his first race of the season, took second in 57:57 from Kelly Miller by three seconds. "I fell off the pace as the lactic acid started building up," Miller said. "At four and a half miles he and Schmitz agreed to run together." Miller said the leaders went through the first mile in 5:08 or 5:09 and the second in 5:20. Runners faced a headwind for the first five miles and hills the rest of the way. Shelly James led the women in 68:58 despite a blister. Dawn Rider was second in 74:26 and Sue Mello third in 75:35. Sam McPhetres, a Juneau-Douglas High School track and cross country runner, won the two-mile in 12:06, and Michele Ramsey led the women's field in 12:53. Gail Coenraad ran it with her two-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Marnita. The race was organised by Phil Moritz and sponsored by Coors Beer. The Southeast Road Runners had measured the course. "Mostly the course is flat, and it's all on pavement. There are some hills in the latter stages, so overall it's a real nice race," Moritz said. Despite the name, the preview noted that in thirteen runnings the race had been rained on once. Going into it the Empire gave the ten-mile record as 52:51, set by Guy Thibodeau in 1983, and the fastest by a woman as 62:11, by Kathy O'Connell in 1987. Neither was approached. The correction read: "Because of inaccurate results, there was an error in the finish order of Magnificent Mendenhall Mudpuddle Meet in Monday's Empire. Dawn Rider finished second overall among women with a time of 74 minutes, 26 seconds. Sue Mello was third with a time of 75:35. The Empire regrets the error." Her row here carries the corrected time and a note giving the one first printed. The finish list and the report spell her Mellow; the correction, the 1990 Glacier 10K and the 1990 Governor's Cup all spell her Mello, which is the spelling used. Two finishers could not be named. The paper printed, under its own two-mile list: "NOTE: Two runners' names were not recorded. Runners with bib Nos. 465 and 464 should call 586-5226 8 a.m.-2 p.m." Their bib numbers are the only record of them, so they are kept here. The report calls the two-mile an inaugural race, and the preview says one "has been added". The archive's own 1980 Meet holds a two-mile race alongside its ten and its seven, so this looks more like a distance the club brought back than one it invented. Both are recorded because the sources genuinely differ. Chris Phillips and Leslie Weaver tied for fourth among the women aged 30-39, in 86:39. |
