The eighth annual Flannigan's Run, Saturday 17 March 1990, from the Mt. Jumbo Gym on Douglas Island. It drew a record field of 86 runners; the Empire noted that the previous high turnout was 50, in 1983. "Whether it was the Empire Cup Runners Series, a new desire for fitness, a population increase or just great weather," the paper wrote, the race filled up. Rick Thibodeau, who won the men's division of the inaugural Empire Cup series in 1989, took the fastest time of the day over five miles in 25:56. Jami Ries was the quickest woman, crossing the line at Mount Jumbo gym in 34:32. "It was a nice surprise," Ries said, adding that she usually is not a competitive runner. "I'm not really into racing, I like to train for the health of it. I guess I just had a good day. I've been running for eons, and if things go well I stick with it. But I also like to do different fitness activities." The one-mile run was held for the first time in 1990. Betsy Hamilton won the women's race in 9:11 and Sam McPhetres, a high school runner, the men's in 6:35. Janelle Billingslea led the girls in 9:16, and a handful of boys aged 13-and-under turned in sub-9-minute times: Jeffrey Early in 8:20, then Glen Aronson 8:28, Stephen Brooks 8:36 and Paul Ecklund 8:38. Six-year-old Robbie Roberts earned six Empire Cup points by braving the full five-mile run, finishing in 61:02 - the same time as Wayne Roberts, who was 18th in the men's 40-49 division. Among the men's masters, Glenn Frick finished the five miles in 29:10, the 12th-fastest among all the male runners, and Art Peterson was second in 35:04. Mike Miller won the 60-plus division in 48:15, from Elmer Ignell. NOTES ON THE LIST. Six times are printed with a final digit that the scan does not carry - the ink has bled and 0, 8 and 9 share a shape - and each of those rows is stored at the start of its ten-second window with a note saying so. They are Phil Moritz, Rai Bennert and Michael Knapp in the men's 40-49, Sue Scott in the women's 30-39, Tim McCorcle in the men's 20-29 and Bruce Aronson in the men's 30-39. None of them can have finished out of the order printed. Two other rows carry notes. The finish list gives Jami Ries 34:32 where the report of the same day says 34:42, and the list is what is stored. The list prints Connie McKenzie's surname as "McKenize" where the standings table beside it prints "McKenzie". |
