The Glacier 10K Run, sponsored by the Southeast Road Runners, and the first distance event of the 1990 season. Both races are in the Empire Cup Runners Series.
History The Glacier 10-kilometer run of Saturday 21 April 1990, sponsored by the Southeast Road Runners. The Empire described it as the inaugural running and as the first distance event of the season, and put the field at nearly 60 competitors despite intermittent rain. It is the earliest Glacier 10K the archive holds; the next is 1993.

Rick Thibodeau won in 32:50. Alan Graves was third across the line and led the 40-49 division in 34:57. Shelly James was the first woman in 40:14 and Sue Mello the second in 44:51. James complimented all 13 women who ran.

In the one-mile run, 11-year-old Scott Adair won in 6:40, and Leslie Weaver led the women in 6:50.

James, Kevin Olson, Graves, Mello and Thibodeau each took seven points for the Empire Cup Runners Series, as did Robbie Roberts in the 13-and-under, Jason Hetherington in the 14-19, Charles Northrup in the masters, Mike Miller in the masters 60-plus and Sandra Knapp in the women's 40-49. The next race in the series was the May Day Mud Run the following Saturday.

SOURCES: "Hot race, cool day / Thibodeau, James win Glacier 10K" by Richard F. Schmitz, Juneau Empire, Monday 23 April 1990, page 9; and the finish list on page 11, headed "Glacier 10K Run / April 21, 1990".

NOTES ON THE LIST. The report gives Kevin Olson, second overall, as 49 seconds behind the winner, which would make him 33:39. The finish list reads 33:2 followed by a digit the scan cannot carry, so the gap it records is between 30 and 39 seconds. Both figures are the same paper on the same day and neither is corrected here; his row carries a note.

Eight times are printed with a digit the scan does not resolve, and each of those rows is stored at the start of its window with a note giving the range. Six are a final seconds digit. Two are a minutes digit, and so a weaker claim: Dede Abood's time is 48:30 or 49:30, and Sandra Knapp's is 48:21 or 49:21.

Karen Laquaglia, ninth among the women aged 30-39, is printed with no time at all and is held here with a zero time. Karen Cooper is printed with a time but no place number, the list running straight on from the fourth woman; she is recorded as fifth.
