History The Capital City Run of Saturday 10 August 1991, from the salmon viewing area at the Mendenhall Glacier: a quarter marathon of 6.55 miles and a half marathon of 13.1 miles. Despite the Golden North Salmon Derby running at the same time, it drew what the organiser Wendie Marriott called a record field of 89.

Course records fell in abundance. Frank Young won the quarter marathon in 33:52 and Arturo Rodriguez was second in 33:56, both inside Rick Thibodeau's standing mark of 34:46. Three women beat Dawn Rider's 44:32, which had stood since 1989: Lisa Kirsch first in 38:38, Jetta Whittaker in 44:07 and Margaret Feige third in 44:11.

In the half marathon Terri Branton had the fastest time among the women, 1:50:36, from Chris Winter in 1:53:38, with Leslie Weaver and Marian Koelsch tied for third in 1:55:56. Dan Kelliher of Sitka was clocked at 1:13:55 to win, Jim Douglas second in 1:14:55 and Chip Lende third in 1:15:38. Al Graves, who holds the course record at 1:10:38, was fourth in 1:16:42. The weather was cloudy and mild with no rain.

When Mik Segin approached the finish line he knew some miles were missing. Segin, from Czechoslovakia and speaking little English, had chosen the half marathon but inadvertently turned round at the quarter-marathon marker, so the organisers sent him out one more time. He completed two 6.55-mile courses for a half marathon and won the men's 50-59 division in 1 hour 23 minutes.

THE LINEAGE OF THIS RACE, as the preview to it set out: "The Capital City Run, in one form or another, has been a local fixture for over a decade, but like a chameleon it keeps changing appearance. The race began as the Capital City Marathon, with a half- and quarter-marathon course offered simultaneously. By 1989 the marathon had been dropped for lack of participation, but since then, with a few course changes, the 13.1-mile half-marathon and 6.55-mile quarter-marathon has grown in popularity." That is why this event and the 1990 one are filed with the CBJ Juneau Marathon, whose half and quarter these courses continue: three of the four course records the preview lists are held in this archive under that series, at exactly the times and years the paper gives.

SOURCES: the preview, "Annual Capital City Run Saturday", Juneau Empire, Friday 9 August 1991, page 9; and "Course records chopped in Capital City Run" with both finish lists, Monday 12 August 1991, page 9.

NOTES ON THE LIST. 88 finishers are recorded against a stated field of 89, with no gap in any division's places, so there is nothing to say who the missing runner was.

The paper's own arithmetic is eight seconds out on one of its record claims: it says Frank Young and Arturo Rodriguez took 54 and 58 seconds off the old mark, and against the 34:46 it prints as that mark Young's 33:52 is 54 seconds exactly while Rodriguez's 33:56 is 50. The times are stored as printed.

The preview gives the women's half-marathon record as Shelly James, 1:25:03 in 1989. This archive holds her at 1:23:39 in 1988 over the same distance in the same series - faster, and a year earlier. Neither is corrected.
