The Juneau Racquet Club Governor's Cup fun run.
History The Juneau Racquet Club Governor's Cup of Saturday 15 July 1995, five kilometres through Juneau, with 132 runners.

"They should change the name of the event to the Thibodeau Cup," the Empire began. Rick Thibodeau broke the 16-minute barrier in 15:49, beat his older brother Guy by 25 seconds, and finished first for the eleventh time in twelve years - 19 seconds faster than his winning time the year before. His only loss in thirteen Governor's Cup runs was the result of a missed turn in 1985.

Thibodeau said he was surprised to finish under 16 minutes because he had been ill. "I hadn't run all week and I felt real sluggish just before the race," he said. "Once the run started, it was the other runners who felt sick - trying to keep up with a man on a mission." At 37 he still enjoyed beating Guy, 43, who used to beat him. "Guy's always been a better runner. Age for age, his times are always faster. I had a tough time getting over the hurdle of ever beating Guy."

Michelle Ripp, of Madison, Wisconsin, was the first woman and 18th overall in 18:46, almost two minutes ahead of the second-place woman, Louise Yount, who completed the course in 20:44. Ripp, a former college runner at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, had had little time to prepare.

BOTH RECORDS ARE UNOFFICIAL, AND THE EMPIRE SAID SO. Thibodeau's 15:49 and Ripp's 18:46 were both reported as new course records - Ripp's almost two minutes better than the previous women's mark of 19:24.93, set by Tricia Satre in 1993. But the paper added that "the new records are unofficial because of recent changes to the course, which also makes it difficult to compare times", and that qualifier is kept here rather than dropped.

ONLY FOUR RUNNERS ARE HELD HERE. No finish list survives in the clipping, so these are the four the report gives times for out of a field of 132. Jim Douglas and J D Gerhard are named in the photograph caption, leading the field along Calhoun Avenue, but without times. Guy Thibodeau's time is arithmetic rather than a reading, worked from his brother's and the 25-second gap the paper gives; his row says so.
