| History |
The Eaglecrest Road Race of Saturday 26 August 1995, from the bottom of Eaglecrest Road, with runners choosing between 4.8 miles and 1.5 miles. The organiser Tom Meyer said the short course was relatively flat, beginning and ending at Eaglecrest Lodge, while the longer one gained about 1,100 feet in elevation, starting on the road to the ski area about half a mile from North Douglas Highway. "This is a good event for people to test or work on their hill climbing skills in preparation for the Klondike Road Relay," Meyer said. "We're encouraging anyone running the Klondike, especially the hilly legs, to turn out." The Klondike, usually held in mid-September, is a ten-stage relay covering about 110 miles from Skagway to Whitehorse, its first two legs climbing some 3,000 feet to the Canadian border. Meyer said about 50 to 60 people took part in the previous year's race, and reminded entrants of the logistics. "It's a one-way course. You'll have to drop a car off up above and people will need to car pool because there's only so much parking up top." The only source found for this running is that preview, published the day before, so what is recorded here is what was planned rather than what happened. SOURCES: the preview, Juneau Empire, Friday 25 August 1995, page 12, continued from page 11, under the sub-heading "EAGLECREST ROAD RACE / Saturday at 9 a.m. / Start: Bottom of Eaglecrest Rd." The same piece describes the race as one of the few events remaining in the 1995 Empire Cup Runners Series, which is the archive's only evidence that a 1995 series ran. |
