Event Name Only Fools Run at Midnight 1997
Race Name 5K
Event Location Centennial Hall, Juneau
Event Description The annual Only Fools Run at Midnight, a five-kilometre run with a mile-and-a-half walk alongside it, starting beside Centennial Hall as Saturday 21 June 1997 became Sunday. Costume and centipede prizes, with divisions for masters, men, women, children, wheelchair, centipede and businesses. Sponsored by the Juneau Empire, Alaska Airlines, KJUD, KINY and KSUP, with preregistration at the Juneau Racquet Club. The race was a fund-raiser for Muscular Dystrophy of Alaska; much of the twenty-dollar entry went to in-state programmes, and pledge sponsorship raised over ten thousand dollars the previous year. The JDHS chapter of DECA and the U.S. Coast Guard were among the volunteer sponsors. No results were published. The Empire's preview of 20 June reported close to 200 preregistered with 500 expected, and named several of Juneau's leading runners as missing or not racing: Rick Thibodeau, who had won close to half of all the Fools Runs held, was not running; Al Graves was injured; Mara Rabinowitz had moved to Anchorage; AD Gerhard and Andrew Vanderjack were out of town; Jim Shine Jr. had had oral surgery. Glacier 10-K winner Aaron Prussian said he would run in costume only, and Marta Race, the defending youth division champion, said she would run for fun. The organiser was Sarah Ayers; the calendar listing gave Mike Dinneen as the contact.
