| Race Name | Marathon |
| Event Location | Juneau |
| Event Description | Distance: 26.2 miles and 13.1 miles Location: Sandy Beach, Douglas An Empire Cup Runners Series race, with the Douglas Island Half Marathon run concurrently over the same out-and-back course to the end of the Douglas Highway. Alan Thomas of San Diego won the marathon in 3 hours and 2 seconds - his first marathon. He was in Juneau working toward a master's degree in education at the University of Alaska Southeast. "I got suckered into running this one by my friend Anna, who came here from San Diego just to run the marathon," he said. "I had to drive her here, so there was no way she was going to let me not run." Anna Turecek won the women's division in 3:48:47. Steven Schmitz of Juneau was second, 58 seconds behind Thomas, and Tom Meyer third. For the fourth year running, both marathon titles went to visitors. Ninth place went to Andrew Kotulski, a 57-year-old chemical engineer from Montclair, New Jersey, who had run at least four miles every day since 1978 without missing one. This was his twentieth marathon of 1997 and his 255th, and the organisers gave him bib number 254. He had raced in every American state and Canadian province twice and was halfway through a third round, including Boston twenty-one years in a row and one run at a mining site on the northern tip of Baffin Island - "It's a big deal there. Each year it's limited to 120 runners. It's kind of a cult run." Carl Blackhurst of Haines won the half marathon in 1:13:42, having finished second the year before. He ran track and cross country at Adams State in Colorado and was ranked second in the nation in the steeplechase for NCAA Division II. Rob Sowers was second: "I knew he was a good runner. A couple of times I had a lead, and I thought I'd get away from him. But I just didn't have it today." Merry Ellefson was the fastest woman in 1:27:54, twenty seconds outside her own course record. Only the first ten men and first ten women were published for the half marathon, so the results held here are the complete published record rather than the complete field. In the marathon, Mike Cox of Clearwater, Florida and Sue Christianson of Florida finished twenty-first and twenty-second and their times were not printed.
